New Year’s vow: make dent in hunger

As the new year begins, hunger in America is more widespread than at any time since the Great Depression. People who once donated food to food pantries now stand embarrassed in the lines there.

In our great country, so abundantly blessed with natural and human resources, no one, regardless of his or her circumstances, should have to suffer hunger. Instead of resolutions to eat more healthy meals, let’s resolve this year to see that none of our fellow Americans goes hungry.

If you are not seriously impacted by our economic troubles, resolve to drop off a couple of items each week at your local food pantry. Or write a check to Feeding America, the Greater Chicago Food Depository or one of the other agencies that distribute food to thousands and are struggling to keep up with the demand. Individual Americans cannot cure all of the troubles that ail our beloved country, but each of us can make a difference in this area of distress for millions of men, women and children.

In 2012, let’s resolve to end hunger in America.
