Man charged in hunting death of Inverness man

A northern Illinois man was indicted Friday in the death of John Hanlon, of Inverness, a father of four who was fatally shot while deer hunting last November.

Kelly G. Jackson, 53, of East Dubuque, was indicted by a Jo Daviess County grand jury on one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of reckless conduct, according to The Journal-Standard of Freeport.

Also injured in the Nov. 19 accident was Hanlon’s 15-year-old son. All three were firearm deer hunters; Hanlon and Jackson were not in the same hunting party, authorities said.

Involuntary manslaughter is a Class 3 felony punishable with up to five years in jail and/or up to $25,000 in fines. Reckless conduct is a Class A misdemeanor punishable with up to a year in jail and/or up to $2,500 in fines.

The Illinois Conservation police had charged Jackson in November with misdemeanor reckless conduct because he discharged his 12-gauge shotgun an hour ahead of legal shooting hours.

Hanlon was an avid outdoorsman who had worked at a major accounting firm for more than 16 years, and was an international tax partner for the last 12 years.
