Hoffman Estates wins sustainability award

The Village of Hoffman Estates recently received the 2011 Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award for its efforts in protecting the environment and improving the economy with its “Growing to Greenness” program.

The award acknowledged the village’s new Police Station and Fire Station 24, which were both constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards, and efforts to increase the efficiency of existing municipal buildings by installing energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and LED lighting.

Other environmentally friendly practices, such as an anti-idling policy for village vehicles and hosting multiple recycling events throughout the year, also were noted. The village was one of 25 Illinois companies and organizations honored by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at a luncheon in October.
