DH came up short of fearing God

As a longtime subscriber, I read the Herald daily but don't often feel the need to comment on the opinion or Fence Post section. Not because I always agree with what I read, or don't have opinions of my own, I just don't often feel the need to jump into the conversation.

That was until the Dec. 24 opinion page “Holiday wishes from Daily Herald managers, staff” — 18 individual wishes from various managers/staff, and by my count 18 uses of the word “holiday” and zero uses of the word “Christmas.”

Worth mentioning is Assistant Managing Editor Jim Slusher who daringly capitalized the use of the word “Him” in his wish, and online editor Richard Battin who bravely used “Hanukkah” in his.

But seriously, not a single use of the word Christmas? How can that be? I can just imagine a DH email going out to the managers and staff with the idea of this opinion page entry with specific instructions not to use “that” word so nobody would be offended.

Yes, in general terms it is a holiday season — but it's a season of specific traditions and celebrations based on individual religious beliefs. No single tradition, celebration, or belief should be singled out or left out. I appreciate the DH's sentiment in sending these wishes along, but in this reader's humble opinion the DH came up woefully short in their quest to “Fear God.”
