Palatine apartment fire sends 2 to hospital

Two people were injured during an apartment fire in Palatine Tuesday night, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire on a second-floor balcony at 1434 Carol Court at 6:32 p.m. and found heavy fire and smoke showing from the second-floor window.

One man suffered minor burns during the blaze and a woman suffered a “medical condition,” which developed while firefighters were on the scene, according to the Palatine Fire Department. Both victims were taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Firefighters received initial reports than an occupant was trapped in a third-floor unit, but those reports were unfounded. Four people were inside the unit when the fire broke out, officials said.

When firefighters arrived on scene five minutes after the call, Cook County sheriff’s police officers were assisting residents out of the building, said Palatine Battalion Chief Mike Freese.

One unit of the three-story apartment complex, located just southwest of Route 53 and East Dundee Road, was deemed uninhabitable due to fire damage. The residents of the remaining five units of the building were able to stay, officials said.

The residents of the damaged unit made arrangements for the night, according to fire officials.

Firefighters from the Arlington Heights and Long Grove fire departments and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District assisted at the scene.

The cause of the blaze, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damage, remained under investigation Tuesday night.
