19-year-old Chicago's first murder victim

A 19-year-old trying to get away from a man flashing gang signs became Chicago's first murder victim in 2012.

Nicholas Camacho was shot early Monday in an alley on the city's northwest side. Police say Camacho, three other men and a woman were riding in an SUV when they pulled into the alley so that the men could urinate.

Chicago police spokesman Officer Robert Perez says as the men stood in the alley, they were approached by a man who began flashing gang signs. As the men got back into the SUV, the stranger pulled a handgun and opened fire, wounding Camacho in the head. He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

Perez said investigators believe Camacho was an innocent victim, adding no arrests have been made.
