Ultimate Gymnastics team in national meet

Submitted by Jane Feely

For the third time in as many seasons, the Level 7 girls team from Ultimate Gymnastics of Gurnee will be representing Illinois at the National level. The girls claimed the honor by winning the team portion of the competition at The Illinois Judges Cup, held in Bourbonnais recently.

A six-member team from the Gurnee-based squad will now compete at the prestigious 2012 National Judges Cup in Indianapolis, Ind., in January. Ultimate is the first club in Illinois to represent the state at this competition three years in a row.

“I am so proud of our Level 7 team,” Ultimate Head Coach Shane Sanders said. “Everyone performed beyond my wildest expectations which makes me even more excited to see what the remainder of our competition season will bring.”

The squad put up some outstanding routines on their way to their first place award. In her first Level 7 meet, Sonte Turnage (7-10 years) took gold on bars and floor and silver on vault and beam. Her all around score of 37.625 also secured her the top spot on the podium. In the 11-12 age group, the Ultimate girls took the top five spots in the all-around. Ella Peter’s 37.90 put her ahead of teammates Elisabeth Jacobs who took silver (37.60), and Samantha Wahlers who placed third (37.275). In addition, Emily Whitis claimed gold on beam with a 9.65.

In the 13 year old age group, Julia Betman took gold in the all-around and on beam and added silver on floor for good measure. Allie O’Connell’s vault, a powerhouse for the team last season, continues to look strong. She scored 9.55 to take gold in this event.

Also in action at the same meet were Ultimate’s high school gymnasts, all of whom achieved the scores they needed to qualify for their respective State meets in the Spring.

Carmel Catholic’s Lauren Feely and Anna Brandmeier certainly impressed, taking first and second respectively in the all-around at Level 10. In fact it was a clean sweep of gold for Lauren, who prepares to defend her IHSA State beam title this upcoming season. Lake Forest High School’s Kylie Carlson, also competing Level 10, came away with a trio of bronze medals, while her teammates Kat McKeon and Brittany Moccia proved dominant at Level 9. Brittany took gold on vault, beam, floor and in the all-around while Kat claimed the top spot on bars.

At Level 8, Glenbrook North’s Carli Betman took first on vault and beam and second on floor and in the all-around. Warren Junior Kesley Stoecker claimed silver on beam and bronze on bars and in the all-around while her high school teammate Krystal Kofoed placed fourth on floor.

At Level 5, there were successes to celebrate across the age groups. In the 7-8 year old division, Kayleigh Glickley came away with three golds – on vault, beam and in the all around, while team mate Claire Kauppila took the top spot on uneven bars. In the 9 year old age group, Kyleigh Boomer scored an impressive 9.475 to place first in bars, with Emily Isabelli in second place. In the all-around it was silver for Emily and bronze for Lyndsey Basara.

In the 10 year old age group Sabrina Panlaqui had an outstanding meet, placing first on bars and in the all-around and second on vault. She also shared the podium top spot for beam with teammate Riley Finnegan. In the 11+ age group, Delaney Jones won gold on vault.

At Level 6, Leah Medenwaldt placed first in the all-around in the 11-12 year old age group. She also claimed gold on vault, scoring a 9.45. In the same age group, Kylie Skie scored 9.50 to win beam and Gabrielle Panlaqui took silver on beam and in the all-around. In the 13+ age group Nora Steinlein won both vault and bars and placed third in the all-around while Brenna Geier placed first on floor and second on bars, beam and in the all-around.

Also at Level 6, Sylvia Raquel took first place on vault in the 7-10 year old age group and Ally Weihs scored 9.325 to win gold on beam. The two girls were second and third respectively in the all-around.
