Wellness Concepts focus on ‘serve, heal and teach’
An interview with Martin Plotkin, M.D., owner of Wellness Concepts LLC in St. Charles
Q: Describe your business. What do you do?
A: Our business is a professional health care office. I am an M.D. serving our community by offering effective, drug-free, natural medical care. We take the “Do No Harm” precept seriously, and take the whole person into consideration instead of simply treating symptoms. I employ principles of nutrition, complex-homeopathy and human physiology to help the body heal itself, without side effects. Our mission statement is to “serve, heal and teach.”
Q: What made you start your business?
A: Having practiced medicine and surgery for 48 years in the conventional sense, I became increasingly aware of the failure of medicine’s current paradigm for treating patients — prescription drugs and surgery. I knew there had to be a different way to help people. Once I was introduced to complex-homeopathy, natural orthopaedic injection, and treating patients at the physiological level, I knew this is how I wanted to practice medicine.
Q: What has been the most difficult obstacle in running or starting a small business?
A: Getting “the word” out and educating the public on the benefits of being proactive in their health care choices. The concepts of nutrition and homeopathy are typically dismissed as “soft science” unworthy of serious scrutiny and it’s difficult to overcome the prejudice created by Big Pharma and the conventional medicine mindset, even with research-based results.
Q: What do you enjoy most about operating your business?
A: Aside from the literal heartfelt appreciation and hugs from the people we serve, seeing the results we are able to achieve in patients that have been mistreated by conventional medicine is most enjoyable!
Q: Is this what you pictured yourself doing when you were young?
A: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? Absolutely. When I was in medical school I was repulsed by the side-effects of drugs and the necessity to weigh the risks versus the benefits. I am now, after practicing medicine and surgery for 48 years, exactly where I wanted to be “when I grew up” professionally.
Q: What keeps you up at night?
A: The injury and suffering the American people are enduring under our broken health care system, and wishing it would place more emphasis on prevention and health care, instead of sickcare.
Q: If you could give one tip to a rookie business owner, what would it be?
A: To a rookie business owner: perseverance, passion and patience. To a rookie M.D., I would stress the importance of making “caring” a reality. Take the time to truly listen to your patients, meeting them where they are at, and doing your best to improve their overall quality of life.
