Schools must live within their means

Before the ink gets dry on my morning Herald, let me forward my thanks and appreciation for the editorial on the rash of school district actions approving tax levies. With many others I have been following the faithful reporting of these several actions in this area and believe them to be unwarranted and unnecessary.

The fact that school executives and board members (not all board members) found it advisable to ply the Illinois financial formula for the sake of “get what you can while you can” suggests the need for a report card on their school activities.

As a former school board member in this area myself, I am school friendly. My father’s profession was that of a school superintendent. Here’s a conversation opener from chats I have had with my neighbors: Using District 214 as an example, reduce the district budget by $1 million per school, then live within your means, even as the majority of your payers are required to do.
