Simon, Detroit turn back Loyola of Chicago 65-54

Chase Simon’s 17 points led Detroit to its first Horizon League victory of the season with a 65-54 decision over Loyola of Chicago.

Doug Anderson added 14 points, Ray McCallum 13 and Eli Holman 12 for the Titans (7-9, 1-3).

The Ramblers (5-9, 0-4) lost their second in a row despite double-doubles from Ben Averkamp and Walt Gibler. Averkamp had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Gibler went for 10 points and 11 boards.

Loyola led 22-14 with 5:49 left in the first half before Detroit went on a 13-2 run, including six points by Holman, to close the half ahead 27-24.

The Titans extended it to 34-26 on two free throws by Anderson with 16:41 left. The closest Loyola got was 44-39 on a layup by Denzel Brito with 8:44 to play.
