ACC's Cardona reaches 1,000 points
Aurora Central Catholic senior Jackie Cardona entered an exclusive club for high school basketball players Friday night.
During the second quarter of the Chargers' 64-61 win over Metea Valley in the third-place contest of the Oswego East Winter Classic, she scored five points to go over 1,002 points for her career. She would hit for 16 overall.
"It was pretty crazy," Cardona said of reaching the milestone which was announced to the crowd. "I'm really proud and glad I got to accomplish one of my goals." She earned an all-tournament honor for her efforts.
"Before the game, I knew people were thinking about it. I just wanted her to get it over with. She came on strong later and that's the Jackie we know and love," coach Mark Fitzgerald said.
The win improved ACC to 14-4. Cardona said how the Chargers finished the tournament was more important than reaching 1,000 points.
"We've been playing really well. In the past, we were always in the consolation bracket. We were in the winner's bracket this year. I think this will help us do well the rest of the season," she said.
