N. Ind. deer cull delayed until at least January

OGDEN DUNES, Ind. — Opponents of a deer hunt along the Lake Michigan town of Ogden Dunes want the town to voluntarily suspend it until a hearing can be held.
The Times of Munster reports that Department of Natural Resources Commission Law Judge Steven Lucas has granted a continuance on the hearing because an attorney has a family emergency. The town received a special purpose deer control permit in September, allowing hunters to kill 40 deer between November and February.
Some residents opposed the hunt and filed a petition asking for a hearing on the permit’s validity. The residents sought court action to stay the cull until the hearing, but lost.
Two sharpshooters began the cull on Dec. 12, killing a dozen deer before it was suspended because of the holidays.
