Hit-and-run suspect arrested in Chicago

MILWAUKEE — Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in Chicago in a hit-and-run that critically injured a uniformed police officer in Milwaukee.

Officer Frank Vrtochnick, 37, was struck Sunday afternoon as he stood outside his squad car by a motorist who drove on the wrong side of the road and jumped a curb. The driver fled after the crash.

Police say Vrtochnick remains hospitalized in critical condition but continues to improve.

Juan Alvarado of Milwaukee was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County court with first-degree reckless injury and recklessly endangering safety. Alvarado remains in the Cook County jail. Online court records do not indicate a defense attorney.

Vrtochnick’s parents released a statement thanking everyone for their support and asking for continued prayers.
