Suspected drunken driver rescued in western Wis.

ONALASKA, Wis. — A Holmen man was on his way to buy lottery tickets, but it turned out to be a suspected drunken driver’s lucky day.

Trent Nelson was driving at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday when an oncoming pickup truck fishtailed, struck a guardrail and tumbled down a steep embankment in the town of Onalaska.

The truck landed on its roof, and Nelson found 64-year-old Dennis Christopherson trapped.

Two other motorists stopped, Nelson smashed a window with a cane and the three men pulled him out as the pickup went up in flames.

Christopherson, of Holmen, was not injured. He was charged Tuesday with fourth-offense operating while intoxicated and operating after revocation.

Nelson tells the La Crosse Tribune he doesn’t know what would have happened if he didn’t have help getting him out.
