Man charged in Christmas Eve robbery in Elmhurst
A Bellwood man accused in a Christmas Eve robbery in Elmhurst remained jailed Tuesday on $100,000 bail. Rodney E. Payton, 22, is accused of acting as a getaway driver after another man robbed the victim of a pair of Nike Air Jordan gym shoes about 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Elm Creek Apartments.
Police said the victim believed he would be swapping shoes with a man he’d arranged to meet through Craigslist but was robbed at gunpoint by a partially masked assailant instead.
Payton was arrested within hours after police located his car and found a loaded .38 caliber pistol inside, authorities said.
Police said they tentatively identified the other suspect and are investigating his whereabouts.
