Tax breaks only promote corruption

The time has come when we should let “too big to fail” fail. Let Sears, CME Group, CBOE Holdings and others leave the state of Illinois. Correct the egregious pension and labor union systems that make it impossible to financially support the membership now and in the future. Perhaps, if we were able to do those things, Illinois would have to take a look at what makes Illinois a toxic climate for business as well as its residents unless you are in the entitlement group.

In the short run, giving tax breaks to companies to stay here, bailing out the “too bigs” of the world and the promise of a luxurious retirement for many union employees keeps the state motor running, though on empty. Allowing these actions and attitudes to continue promotes the corruption of many of those in power and continues the problem.

If we could limit malpractice and over-the-top settlements in our Illinois courts, that would be a starting point. It would be difficult if Sears and others would leave, but it might highlight the need for fiscal responsibility that would be painful for everyone in the short term, but healthy in the long-term. The taxpayers should not have to bear the cost of the many questionable practices and self-serving laws passed by our politicians. The caveat, of course, is that no one is willing to give up the candy on his watch.
