Man dies in Evansville standoff after woman killed

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Authorities in Evansville say a man who fatally shot a woman later died after a six-hour standoff with police officers.

Police say the woman’s young son called Monday, saying that a man had shot his mother at a house on the city’s southeast side. The man came outside and fired gunshots at the arriving officers, who weren’t hit but returned fire.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports officers surrounded the home and that an older woman was released unharmed. Police say the man later told a negotiator he had been shot in the ribs and he died after officers entered the house Monday night.

WFIE-TV reports the county coroner identified those killed as Steve Rickard and Jennifer Peters. Information on their relationship wasn’t immediately released.
