½Alleged police torture victim sues Chicago, Burge

A 46-year-old Chicago man, exonerated after serving 25 years in prison, has filed a lawsuit claiming former Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge tortured him into a false confession.

Attorneys for Eric Caine filed suit Tuesday in federal court in Chicago. The suit also names the city of Chicago and other former Chicago police officers.

Caine’s conviction came largely on the basis of statements he made during police questioning. He claims Burge and his crew of detectives coerced him into implicating himself in the killings of a couple found stabbed 34 times.

Burge was convicted last year of perjury and obstruction of justice for lying in a civil suit when he said he’d never witnessed or participated in the torture of suspects. He’s serving a 4-year sentence in federal prison.
