Naperville Metra Station Platform Improvement Project now complete

End of Phase 4 Reconstruction Marks Completion of Eight-Month-Long Metra Project

The City of Naperville is pleased to announce Metra has finished work ahead of schedule on the Naperville Metra Station Platform Improvement Project, a $2 million project that included removal and reconstruction of both platforms at the downtown Naperville Metra Station. The project, funded by the West Suburban Mass Transit District and Metra, was scheduled for a completion date of Jan. 30, 2012, but was finished Dec. 15.

“I'd like to thank Metra, the contractors that worked on the project and commuters and residents for their patience during the disruptions to the area this past year,” said Karyn Robles, Transportation & Planning Team Leader for the City of Naperville. “We're very pleased with the finished project that enhances the safety of our commuters who use this station.”

In spring 2011, Metra began construction to replace the north and south platforms at the Naperville Metra Station as well as reconstruct the railroad bridge over Washington Street. The final phase of the project, Phase 4, began in October and included temporary changes to Pace bus pick-up and drop-off locations, daily fee parking spaces, pedestrian access and closure of the train station building for four days.

The Naperville Metra Station is the second busiest suburban station in the Metra network, serving approximately 4,000 commuters each day. The boarding platforms adjacent to the tracks had received regular maintenance since initial installation approximately 30 years ago but were too deteriorated to be repaired with routine maintenance. Although a Metra project, the City of Naperville continuously shared notifications of construction activity and disruptions in the area to commuters, residents and businesses throughout the duration of the project.
