Electronics banned from landfills starting Jan. 1

In September 2009, Illinois became the 16th state to adopt an electronics recycling law known as the Electronics Products Recycling and Reuse Act. This legislation initially banned televisions and monitors from entering Illinois landfills beginning Jan. 1, 2012.

Recently, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation that expands the number and type electronic products also banned from landfills on Jan. 1. These include:

Ÿ TVs and monitors

Ÿ Computers, including tablets

Ÿ Computer accessories (keyboards, mouse devices)

Ÿ Printers and scanners

Ÿ Fax machines

Ÿ VCRs and DVD players/recorders

Ÿ Video game consoles

Ÿ Portable digital music players

Ÿ Small-scale servers

Ÿ Digital converter boxes

Ÿ Cable/satellite receivers

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County works with the Northwest suburbs to provide environmentally-sound recycling for end-of-life electronics through one-day collection events, permanent drop-off locations and the At Home Pickup Program.
