Townships serve important mission

I have been following a disturbing news trend recently that involves the elimination of townships as a means of reducing spending. In the current environment, where services are the main targets of cutting, townships continue to provide important ongoing services to a key segment of the community — namely, the senior population. Our township, Warren Township, contains a senior center that offers a variety of services, including physical fitness classes, assistance with senior issues, transportation subsidies, and social events. The aerobic and conditioning classes are overflowing with enthusiastic and fit seniors, who can thank the hardworking members of the senior center for their robust health. These services are not redundant and they are a critical component of many people’s lives. The elimination of townships may save some money, but the costs to the folks who depend on them will be much greater. Lawmakers should communicate with their senior constituents before embarking on that journey.
