Coverage exaggerated meetings violation

I read in the Herald this morning, on the front page no less, of the Mundelein High School Board’s violation of the Open Meetings laws.

I appreciate that the Herald went to great lengths to investigate this infringement, and that the Herald is looking out for the interests of the electorate in District 120. But really, aren’t there other, more serious violations of these statutes than a small group of board members gathering information so that they can better fulfill their fiduciary duties?

The board members here were doing their diligence in viewing all the major artificial turf alternatives so that they could make an informed decision. To excoriate them with a headline on Page 1 exaggerates the seriousness of the infraction, implies that the public was disserved and will doubtless have a deleterious effect on other boards’ attempts to get relevant facts prior to making decisions.

I concur that the letter of the law was violated, but nothing in your reporting implies that anything was done that was untoward or damaging. I believe the District 120 Board deserves better treatment in this regard.
