Recount Monday in E. Ind. city’s mayoral race

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — Residents of an eastern Indiana city where the November election ended with a cliffhanger could soon learn who their next mayor will be.

A recount commission is scheduled to meet Monday to review absentee ballots cast in Connersville’s mayoral election. Democratic mayoral candidate Harold Gordon sought the recount after vote tallies showed incumbent Republican Leonard Urban won November’s election by 14 votes.

Fayette County Clerk Melinda Sudhoff tells the Palladium-Item of Richmond the panel will feed 220 optical-scan absentee ballots through scanners and recount them, and may review other impounded election materials.

The remaining 2,688 ballots were cast on voting machines that don’t produce a paper trail.

Under Indiana law, the panel must finish its work by the end of the day Tuesday unless a special judge intervenes.
