Naperville man charged with aggravated robbery

A 34-year-old Naperville man faces an aggravated robbery charge in connection with an early morning stickup at a Mobil gas station on the 1600 block of North Route 59 in Naperville, police said Friday.

Antonio L. Alexander of the 30W000 block of Valencia Court later was apprehended by Downers Grove police and identified in a lineup.

Naperville police said they were called to the Mobil station about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, but the suspect already had fled in a black, four-door Chevy Impala with temporary license plates.

Naperville Sgt. Gregg Bell said officers spotted the car heading east on I-88 and followed it before trying to make a traffic stop in Downers Grove.

Bell said Alexander attempted to flee in the car, but almost immediately struck a median and blew out three tires near Butterfield Road and I-355. He abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Downers Grove police later found Alexander walking along Butterfield Road.

Bell said Alexander had entered the station with his hand in his pocket, implying he had a gun, and demanded money from the clerk. He fled with less than $100.

Alexander did not have a gun, Bell said, resulting in the aggravated robbery charge as opposed to armed robbery.

DuPage County Judge Karen Wilson set bail Friday at $400,000, meaning Alexander would have to post $40,000 to be released. His next court date is Jan. 9.
