Wis. district cuts Hindu song from holiday concert
GREENDALE, Wis. — An Indo-American activist is objecting after a Milwaukee County school district removed a Hindu song from its holiday concert.
WITI-TV says the Greendale School District cut the Indian song from its performance list. The song is called “Raghupathi Raghav Raja Ram,” (RUH’-goo-puh-thee RAH’-guv RAH’-jah ROM’).
District spokeswoman Anna Madden says the song was replaced “based on concerns from some parents.”
The decision angers Rajan Zed, the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism. He says it’s unfair to single out and remove a Hindu song while retaining other songs such as “Feliz Navidad” and the Jewish song “Hava Nagila.”
Zed says the district is giving preference to one religion over another. He’s asking for an apology to the Hindu community.
Madden says the district stands by its decision.
