Ill. officials suggest safety-themed holiday gifts

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois officials are suggesting holiday gifts with safety and emergency preparedness in mind.

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Illinois Emergency Management Agency has a list and has checked it twice.

It includes weather-alert radios, flashlights and first-aid kids that would help friends and families prepare for disasters. Home-safety gift ideas include smoke alarms, carbon-monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers.

Emergency Management director Jonathon Monken reminded residents of the February blizzard that stranded motorists for hours. He says a vehicle preparedness kit makes a nice gift.

Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis offered flameless scented candles or foldable ladders for second-story escape.
