Wisc. bill places new requirements on abortions
MADISON, Wis. — A Republican-backed bill would place new requirements on women seeking abortions in Wisconsin.
The measure by Republican Sen. Mary Lazich of New Berlin would require that women receiving drugs to induce abortions must have a doctor first perform a physical exam and be in the same room with her where the drugs are administered.
Anyone violating that requirement would be guilty of a felony.
The bill also requires that doctors speak privately with women seeking abortions to make sure they are making the decision on their own and not influenced by others.
Opponents say the proposal before the Senate Health Committee on Tuesday is designed to make it harder for women to obtain abortions.
