What to consider before starting a DIY project

Angie's List and Home Depot have come up with suggestions of how to decide whether to do a project yourself, or hire it done. The variables are expertise, money, time and safety.

Here's the word from Angie's List:

• What experience (if any) do I have? Be realistic about your skills. Not only will it be more expensive to hire someone to fix your mistakes, but it might be difficult to find someone willing to take on a botched job.

• Do I have the time? Many home improvement projects take weeks rather than days. Measure the inconvenience against the cost of hiring a professional.

• Do I have the right tools? Consider what special tools you'll need for your project. Buying or renting tools might not end up being cost effective.

And the view from Home Depot:

• It's important to consider the high cost of mistakes or trying to use the wrong equipment. Many products such as cabinets, doors, windows and countertops, must be custom ordered and manufactured based on precise measurements for the individual space they will fill. If these measurements are incorrect, retailers and manufacturers will not be able to take them back — and that can be a mistake worth thousands.

• It's important to keep in mind that manufacturers' warranties on almost any product are voided if the installation is incorrect, while a reputable installer will cover any warranty issues.

• Installing a ceiling fan or light fixture make great projects for most, but they can be dangerous if the ceiling is high, like those found in many of today's two-story family rooms. If you're not adept at working in high places, it's best not to risk it.

• Power tools can be extremely dangerous in inexperienced hands. Experienced homeowners and pros alike should always read instructions and safety manuals carefully, and should never become so comfortable and relaxed that they forget safety.

• Electrical work can be relatively simple, but extremely hazardous both during and after installation if it's not done correctly. If you're unsure, hire a pro.
