St. Charles police say 4 face forgery felony charges

Four people face felony charges of forgery, accused of trying to cash fraudulent checks Friday in St. Charles.

And while St. Charles police were investigating the case, South Elgin police showed up to say the four are suspects in a forgery in that town, according to a police report.

St. Charles police said those charged are Stacey L. Sanders, 36, of the 16300 block of South St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, five counts; Antione L. Mahone, 23, of the 1500 block of South Hamlin Avenue, Chicago, four counts; Gabrielle Dvorak, 20, of the 400 block of Washington Boulevard, Oak Park, four counts; and Shenika T. Williams, 30, of the 4900 block of West Kintz, Chicago, two counts.

According to St. Charles police, Williams tried to cash a $2,500 check, drawn on the account of a New York City business, at the Chase bank branch at 575 S. Randall Road. Because she did not have an account with Chase, the teller alerted the branch manager, who told Williams that she would need to supply a thumbprint for identity verification, which she did. The manager then called the business, which told him the check was fraudulent. Williams ran out of the bank, leaving her driver’s license behind, entered a vehicle and exited onto Randall Road.

Geneva and Batavia police officers stopped the vehicle at Mill Street and Randall Road. Williams, Sanders and Dvorak were passengers, and Mahone was driving.

According to police, Williams said she ran out of the bank because she had received a phone call telling her there was a family emergency.

While the suspects were being interviewed, South Elgin police detectives arrived at the St. Charles police station, saying the four were suspects in a $7,000 check forgery case.

And the bank manager told police that Dvorak had successfully cashed a forged check, for $2,500, at the branch Nov. 21.

St. Charles police found $2,479 in Sanders’ coat pocket, and Kane County jail intake officers found $2,055 in one of Mahone’s shoes. Police have not determined if the cash is connected to the forgery cases.

The forgery counts are Class 3 felonies, punishable by two to five years in prison if convicted.

All are free on bond.

South Elgin police could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
