Community Bankers group offers scholarship

The Peoples' Bank of Arlington Heights is encouraging local high school seniors to apply for the 2012 Community Bankers Association of Illinois Foundation Scholarship Program. Applications are now available at the bank's two locations at 41 S. Vail Ave. and 1104 S. Arlington Heights Road.

While the bank has promoted the event for a number of years, they are encouraging local students to participate with greater enthusiasm than ever, as the statewide winner for 2011, DeLaney Harter of Buffalo Grove, submitted her application through The Peoples' Bank.

“The competition awards $1,000 each to 13 winners from across the state, and a renewable award for four years to the overall winner,” explained Peoples' Bank representative Harland Krebel, Jr. “Last year, we worked with DeLaney and she was named the overall winner. We were very pleased to present her with the award. We'd love to do the same for a local student again this year.”

To enter, students must submit a completed application along with an essay to be reviewed by a panel of CBAI judges. This year's essay topic is “How can a community bank make a difference during a down economy?” Krebel said that The Peoples' Bank is willing to spend time with the student, educating them about the role a community bank plays in a local economy. “We are always pleased to spend time with the students here at the bank and explain what it is that we do.”

Applications for the competition are available at the bank, with completed materials due no later than Feb. 3, 2012. The scholarship program is in its 26th year. In addition to the cash awards to the student winners, the overall winner's school will also receive a $500 donation from the CBAI Foundation.

Krebel suggests that students stop in before the Christmas holiday to get started. “Most students have submitted their college applications by now, so this is a great time to begin researching scholarship opportunities. If they pick up the application now, we can schedule a time to meet, and the student can have plenty of time to work on their essay prior to the deadline. For a possible $4,000, we think it is a good investment of time.”
