NE Ind. project gets $2M for assisted living units

AVILLA, Ind. — A northeastern Indiana senior complex will receive a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to convert 20 housing units for assisted living so frail residents can continue to reside there.

The federal agency announced the grant to Laverna Terrace in Avilla on Monday. Avilla is about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne.

HUD says the money will be used to remodel kitchens and bathrooms and to develop common areas including a new commercial kitchen and dining room, a therapy room; laundry facilities; a nursing office; and multipurpose space.

HUD says the Indiana project is among seven in five states that are receiving a total of $24 million in grants for assisted living.
