Waubonsie Valley's Morice breaks 1,000-point barrier
While rolling to her team's seventh straight victory, Waubonsie Valley senior Tami Morice received some acknowledgement and applause after notching career point 1,001 in the Warriors 48-36 victory Tuesday night.
"I really didn't know they were going to do that," Morice said after the game was stopped to make the announcement early in the second quarter. "I was wondering why it was taking so long. It was a little embarrassing, but it was OK. It feels great to be 7-0."
"She finally got that little monkey off her back," Waubonsie coach Kim Connell said. "She had been struggling with her shooting in the first five games. I'm glad she got her 1,000 points out of the way."
The game began in Lake Park's favor as the Lancers tore off an 11-2 run on 3-pointers from Alyssa Hernandez, Alexis Hahn and Amanda Prosperi. But Waubonsie answered with a 17-0 run of its own, led by Morice and senior Becky Williford.
"We had a JV game yesterday and we didn't get a full practice in and that worried me a little bit," Connell said of the slow start. "We did come out a little slow."
The Warriors kept the Lancers scoreless for more than five minutes, using a tight defense and timely shooting from Morice to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard.
But Lake Park woke up with a couple 3-pointers and converted free throws, trailing at the half 26-23.
"We kind of sustained their push in the first half and came back," Lake Park coach Andrea Miller said. "They're obviously a good team and they're just going to keep coming at you."
In the second half the Warriors jumped out to a 12-3 run, powered by senior Rachael Ross and Erica Jordan. Ross scored 14 points, Jordan 10.
The fourth quarter was tighter defensively, but a valiant Lake Park (4-3, 1-2) effort wasn't enough to deny the Warriors' 7-0 start to the season.
"We didn't score enough in the second half, and they shut us down there," Miller said. "We just weren't getting any second-chance points. We just have to do some of the little things better."
