Mundelein wins at Lake Zurich

Mundelein's boys basketball team stayed undefeated Tuesday night, holding off host Lake Zurich to capture a 51-42 win in North Suburban Lake Division action.

Mundelein (7-0, 2-0) got balanced scoring, as Robert Knar scored 12 points, while Sean O'Brien and Cliff Dunigan added 11 apiece.

In the final 30 seconds of the first half, Knar hit a 3-pointer and Dunigan beat the buzzer with a layup to stretch the Mustangs' lead to 24-18.

Lake Zurich (2-4, 0-2) was still within 36-30 after three quarters but couldn't find a way to get past Mundelein in the fourth.

Mirko Grcic had 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Bears, who led 13-11 after one quarter. Doug Murphy (6 rebounds) and Jeff O'Brien added 11 points each.

"We played hard but made some mental mistakes on both ends," Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. "Mundelein is a good team, so they capitalized."

Grayslake Central 54, Vernon Hills 50: Jordan Taylor scored 15 points to lead the Rams in the nonconference game.

Grayslake Central (4-3), which has won four of its last five, also got 10 points apiece from Tyler Smith and Danny Reed.

Vernon Hills (4-3) was led by Stephen Curry's 20 points. Darren Hoveydai added 14.

Grant 62, Wauconda 56: Jared Helmich's 15 points led Grant to the North Suburban Prairie win.

Allen Lewis, Ilya Kadushin and Sean Wells each had 12 points for Grant (4-3, 1-1).

Wauconda's Kyle Ryan led all scorers with 25 points, including four 3-pointers, while also coming up with 6 steals. Austin Swenson had 12 points for Wauconda (3-4, 0-2), and Matt Mead contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Lakes 68, Round Lake 34: Jay-Jay Elvir scored a game-high 19 points for the Eagles in the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Lakes (4-3. 2-0) also received double-digit points from Direll Clark (11) and Justin Schneider (10). Twelve Eagles scored.

Round Lake (0-2 NSC Prairie) was led by Juddon Carter's 16 points.
