Poetry workshop in Palatine to explore the Ghazal

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 10, led by Jan Bottiglieri. Saturday’s topic will be “Exploring the Ghazal.”

Evoking longing, loss, and passion for an unobtainable beloved, the ghazal is a rich poetic form that dates back to 7th-century Persia. Ghazals are written in couplets that function, in the words of poet and ghazal master Agha Shalid Ali, like “stones in a necklace,” with a repeating word or phrase that creates opportunities for shifts in tone and meaning.

Learn the rules and possibilities of this ancient form, read and discuss excellent examples, and explore the writing of ghazal couplets. See how experiencing this beautiful poetic form can help your writing take off in new directions.

Jan Bottiglieri’s poetry has appeared in Rhino, Oyez Review, Little America, Moon Journal and Point of View, as well as the anthologies Where We Live: Illinois Poets and the upcoming Pacific Northwest Crow Poetry. She is a member of the Arlington Poetry Project and was a finalist in the Poetry Center of Chicago’s Juried Reading in 2001. She is currently working on her second chapbook.

Participants are encouraged to bring 12 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. For information and to RSVP, call the gallery at (847) 991-7966 or email nwcc@northwestculturalcouncil.org.
