Cook County filing period closes without surprises

The final day for candidates to throw their hat into the 2012 primary election ring came and went Monday without any surprises for suburban Cook County voters.

As expected, Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from Chicago 22nd Ward Alderman Ricardo Munoz, who submitted his paperwork during the Monday lunch hour.

Brown, who's seeking a fourth term, finds herself in a familiar spot.

After running unopposed in the 2008 primary, she won 58 percent of the vote in a three-way general election race despite not being endorsed by any major daily newspaper. The former Chicago Transit Authority auditor general also defeated three Democrats in the 2000 primary and then won more than 60 percent of the vote in two-way primary and general election races in 2004.

Brown's opponent this time around was the youngest member of the Chicago city council when he was first appointed in 1993, according to Munoz's biography on the city of Chicago website. He was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and currently resides in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez does not have an opponent in her bid for a second term after Monday's filing deadline passed.

Likewise, state Rep. Karen Yarbrough, Democrat from Maywood, is unopposed in her bid to succeed Eugene “Gene” Moore as recorder of deeds.

First-time Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak of Wheeling faces a District 1 Republican primary challenge from Sean Morrison of Palos Park. Casey Thomas Griffin of Midlothian was the lone Democrat to file.

Patlak and Morrison, in addition to several dozen candidates present to submit their paperwork at the Cook County Clerk's office when its doors opened Nov. 28, will be in a lottery at 10 a.m. Wednesday to determine ballot position.

Seven Democrats, none from the Northwest suburbs, are seeking one of three board seats up for election at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The pool includes Patrick Daley Thompson of Chicago, the grandson of the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.

Republican Harold “Noonie” Ward of Chicago filed his petition Monday, as did Green Party candidates Julie Samuels of Oak Park, Dave Ehrlich of Chicago and Karen Roothaan of Chicago.

In Lake County's 17th District county board race, which covers Lake Barrington and Tower Lakes, newcomer Mary Schorr of Wauconda submitted her paperwork Monday to challenge Nick Sauer of Fox River Grove and Dan Quick of Wauconda in the Republican primary.

In the 19th District, which covers parts of Barrington, Deer Park and Kildeer, Democrat Deborah Barry of Deer Park will challenge incumbent Republican Craig Taylor in the November general election. Both are unopposed in the primary.

In McHenry County's District 1, which includes Algonquin Township, incumbent Republicans Robert Bless of Fox River Grove and Anna May Miller of Cary filed, as did challengers Robert Nowak and Yvonne Barnes, both of Cary. Barnes is a former county board member. Nick Chirikos of Algonquin is unopposed in the Democratic primary.
