Exxon released hydrogen cyanide at Illinois refinery on Dec. 2

Exxon Mobil Corp. released hydrogen cyanide at its refinery in Joliet, Illinois, on Dec. 2, according to a filing with the U.S. National Response Center that said there wasn't any effect on production.

“We believe the hydrogen cyanide emissions from our refinery are above the reportable quantity of 10 pounds per day,” the company said, according to the filing.

U.S. refineries must notify the center if they release hazardous substances in excess of reportable quantities, according to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund.

Bloomberg News couldn't immediately verify that the information in the NRC filing was accurate.
