Teacher donations not being invested

In response to a letter that I wrote about teacher pensions, Bill Getchius wrote that I do not know how teacher pensions work.

I know how they work, but apparently Bill Getchius does not have the facts about TRS (Teachers’ Retirement System). Facts about the fiscal health of TRS are:

Ÿ TRS currently has $34 billion in assets.

Ÿ TRS will pay out $4.1 billion in pension and benefits this year.

Ÿ TRS received $8 billion in total revenues during fiscal year 2010, including $3.1 billion in investment income.

Contrary to what Bill thinks, our contributions are not being invested.
