Opposition to conception law withdrawn
Imagine my surprise to read Terry Cosgrove’s letter on Nov. 21 in the Daily Herald. The letter only supports the fact that the president and CEO of Personal PAC, Terry Cosgrove, is 100 percent pro-abortion.
He takes issue with the Catholic Conference statement on victims of rape. He calls them duplicitous with their concern for rape victims while denying them emergency contraception. Mr. Cosgrove is referring to a bill that provides emergency contraception to victims of rape.
Actually, the Catholic Conference of Illinois withdrew its opposition to the bill because the law did not require Catholic hospitals to take any actions that violate the Ethical and Religious Directives for Health Care Workers, nor did it require that they make referrals to anyone that does so.
It also left undisturbed the Healthcare Rights of Conscience Act. The model protocol for Catholic Hospitals incorporates the “Peoria Protocol” as a method for determining whether or not dispensing emergency contraceptives is morally acceptable.
It also includes guidelines for helping survivors of sexual assault with counseling and follow-up support. Minors would not have access to abortifacient interventions under this protocol, because no drugs will be given out if they have an abortifacient effect and no referrals will be made.
Killing is never a solution to a social problem. A society that accepts killing as a solution is a society that will not survive.
