Must every TV be turned on at stores?

It seems that every week I am inundated with letters, radio ads and newspaper ads telling me to conserve energy, so I turn off the lights, use smaller-wattage bulbs, drive less, etc. But what good is all that when I walk into three — count them, three — electronics stores and see every TV turned on? Unless they generate their own electricity my efforts are not doing much good. Why every TV?
