Rubicon plant proposal meeting is Thursday

A meeting regarding Rubicon Technology's proposal to build a second plant in Batavia has been moved to Thursday.

The meeting, sponsored by Rubicon, is at 5:30 p.m. at its plant at 950 Douglas Road.

Rubicon is proposing to build in the Fox Valley Business Park, which is east of Route 25 and north of the Illinois Prairie Path.

It has asked permission of the city to re-subdivide three of the lots in the center of the park.

The park was initially subdivided in 1987 into 43 lots. After that, houses were built to the east of the park.

About a half-dozen buildings have been constructed in the park. It is zoned for light industrial uses.

Nearby residents have protested the height of the building Rubicon proposes. The Batavia Plan Commission and the city council's community development committee have approved the plan, but the city council Nov. 21 sent it back to community development for more discussion.

Rubicon makes monocrystalline sapphire products which are used in light-emitting diodes, radio-frequency integrated circuits and blue laser diodes.

It submitted plans for the second plant in October.
