Grayslake community service officer injured in bus accident

A Grayslake community service officer on traffic duty suffered multiple fractures when she was struck in the back of the head by a mirror of a passing minibus.

The unnamed 59-year-old officer was directing traffic Tuesday afternoon at the Prairie View School on Route 120 in Hainesville when she was hit by the extended mirror attached to the front fender of the bus, Grayslake Interim-Police Chief Matt McCutcheon said.

The officer was knocked down and her face hit the concrete, McCutcheon said. She suffered a broken nose, a broken eye socket, two fractured wrists and some severe lacerations, he said.

She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where she is in stable condition, he said.

McCutcheon said a veteran soldier who witnessed the accident attended to the female officer until paramedics could arrive.

The bus driver has not been charged, McCutcheon said, but officers are investigating the accident.

The bus driver didn’t see the officer until just before the collision occurred, McCutcheon said.

“We went to the hospital Tuesday evening and then again (Wednesday),” he said. “It seems like it was just a real unfortunate accident.”
