Palatine gas leak fixed Wednesday

A crew working on Palatine streetlights for a private contractor drilled into a 4-inch gas main about 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Palatine Fire Department. The leak was in the parkway at the corner of White Willow Bay and Illinois Avenue. Crews from the Palatine Fire Department, assisted by crews from the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District, evacuated adjacent homes, monitored the gas levels in the homes and closed the area to traffic. Local schools were notified and homeowners were told to stay inside and keep windows shut. No gas was detected in homes. NICOR was on the scene within 20 minutes and had the leak stopped by 12:53 p.m. Palatine Fire Department officials said before digging, people should call Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (JULIE) at 811.
