31 cited for disability parking abuse over weekend

SPRINGFIELD --The Illinois Secretary of State's office says agency police issued 31 citations over Thanksgiving weekend in a crackdown on people who illegally park in spaces reserved for the disabled.

Secretary of State Jesse White says the effort will continue through the end of December at shopping malls throughout Illinois.

White says his goal is not to ticket shoppers but to ensure spaces are available for those who need them.

Parking in a spot reserved for disabled drivers without a proper placard or license plate carries a fine of as much as $350. That goes up to $500 for people who use a placard or disability license plate if the person to whom it was authorized is not in the vehicle.
