Judson men win at NCCAA nationals

Santiago Munoz’s goal in the second overtime lifted the Judson University men’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over Grace College Wednesday in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.

Judson will now face Geneva College of New York at 4 p.m. Thursday for the right to play in the national championship game. Judson was third at the NCCAA Tournament last year and won the NCCAA national title in 2009.

In Wednesday’s win, Mike Tobie assisted Munoz’s game-winning goal in the 102nd minute. Tobie and Tom Kruse also scored for Judson (14-8-1).

The win was career victory No. 498 for Judson coach Steve Burke.

Women’s basketball

Purdue-Calumet 84, Judson 78: Jacobs graduate Hailey Cnota had a career-high 29 points but the Eagles (2-6, 0-1) fell short in their CCAC opener. Cnota also had 9 rebounds, while Shaniqua Roberts added 12 points and 8 assists for Judson.

Men’s basketball

Judson 80, Purdue-Calumet 79: Down by 7 points at halftime, Judson came back to win its CCAC opener. Josh Edwards had 27 points including seven 3-pointers and Caleb Sutton and Landon Skinner added 11 points each for the Eagles.

Softball

FVSA slapping camp: St. Edward High School and Northern Illinois Lightning 18U coach Jaci Corn will be conducting a slapper’s camp for softball players ages 12-18 on Saturday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 17 at Fox Valley Sports Academy in Elgin from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The camp will teach the fundamentals of slapping and give players the proper footwork and techniques for effective use of the slap.
