Maggie Daley, beloved former first lady of Chicago, dies

Maggie Daley, the wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and a gracious promoter of the city's cultural and educational programs, died last night, her family announced. She was 68. The former Chicago first lady was surrounded by her husband and children when she died just after 6 p.m. When she first learned she had breast cancer in June 2002, Daley said she was shocked. “But you pick up and you move on. ... I'm not alone here. There are a lot of people who have experienced this.” Full story.

Police seeking robber of Batavia sandwich shop

Batavia police said yesterday they are on the hunt for a man who robbed a sandwich shop Wednesday night. Police said the man displayed a black semiautomatic pistol when he stole cash from the Subway restaurant on South Randall Road about 8:40 p.m. No injuries were reported. Witnesses described the suspect as a white man wearing gloves, sunglasses, a puffy blue jacket and a dark wool stocking cap with light stripes. Full story.

Iraq, Iran refugees partake in their first Thanksgiving dinner

Refugees from Iraq and Iran were among the 95 guests of the community Thanksgiving at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods. Church members Dean and Sue Stewart headed a kitchen team that prepared the spread free to anyone who wished to visit around lunchtime yesterday. Among Thursday's visitors were 20 refugees from Iraq and Iran who were brought to St. Matthew by the Rev. Hicham Chehab, pastor of Salam Arabic Fellowship in Lombard. They have been in the U.S. only a month, and were stunned by the beauty of the suburbs. Full story.

Nearly 2,000 show for Fox and the Turkey runs in Batavia

Nearly 2,000 runners prepared for their Thanksgiving feast by taking part in the Fox and the Turkey 4-Mile and Youth Mile races yesterday in Batavia. The winner of the 4-mile race was Matt Bowman of Geneva, who finished in 19:39.48. David Castillo of North Aurora captured the Youth Mile in 5:30.92. Full story.

More runners, but same winner of Naperville Turkey Trot

Former North Central College distance runner Kyle Brady, 23, led all men again in the Naperville Turkey Trot yesterday, finishing the 5K race in 14:52. Exactly three minutes later, triathlete Jocelyn Petrella edged Amber Druien, another former North Central College standout. Brady, who has won three of his six Turkey Trots, said it's just a guilt-free way to start the holiday. “I'm going to run anyway, so I may as well get up a little earlier and try to win the Turkey Trot again,” he said after crossing the finish line. The Har-bowl goes to John Harbaugh

Big brother got the best of little brother in a unique NFL duel last night. The Baltimore Ravens tied a franchise record with nine sacks and beat the San Francisco 49ers 16-6 Thursday night, giving John Harbaugh reason to celebrate after the first NFL game featuring brothers as opposing head coaches.
