Notre Dame at Stanford
Notre Dame (8-3) at Stanford (10-1)
When: 7 p.m. at Stanford Stadium
TV: ABC
Radio: WLS 890-AM
Series: Notre Dame leads 17-8; Stanford won 37-14 last year.
Coaches: David Shaw (10-1, first year at Stanford); Brian Kelly (16-8, second year at Notre Dame).
Players to watch: This game features two Mackey Award finalists in Stanford’s Coby Fleener and Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert. Fleener (28 catches, 551 yards) is a Joliet Catholic grad, while Eifert ranks first in FBS in catches by a tight end (53). … Stanford’s Andrew Luck, a likely Heisman Trophy finalist, has thrown for 2,937 yards and 31 touchdowns, while completing 70.3 percent of his passes. Irish sophomore QB Tommy Rees is on pace to post the second-highest, single-season completion percentage (66.6) in school history.
The skinny: Irish RB Jones Gray, who ran for 791 yards overall and 6.9 per carry, was lost to a season-ending knee injury last week. Fortunately for Notre Dame, it still has Cierre Woods, who became the school’s 10th 1,000-yard rusher. No. 4 Stanford can get to the Pac-12 title game only if Oregon loses to Oregon State. But the Cardinal will be a strong contender for a BCS at-large berth by winning Saturday to finish 11-1. Stanford ranks fourth in the nation in scoring at 45 points per game.
Fast fact: Notre Dame has scored on its opening possession in six of the last seven games.
