Lombard Fire Chief Announces Retirement
After more than 33 years of service with the Village of Lombard, Torrence will retire to take another position as Fire Marshal with the Bristol Kendall County Fire Department. In his new position, Torrence will be responsible for overseeing the Fire Marshal's office, the Fire Investigation Unit and Public Education.
“I have mixed emotions,” Torrence said. “It's bittersweet. The Village has been so good to me. I started as a kid of 21-years-old and I'm leaving as an old man of 55,” Torrence quipped.
Torrence was promoted to Fire Chief in October 2010 from his position of Battalion Chief, a post he held on the Lombard Fire Department for nearly ten years. He also served as Acting Fire Chief for Lombard during an interim period while the search for a new chief was being conducted.
During his 33-year tenure in Lombard, Torrence has served as Emergency Coordinator of Emergency Services, Commander of the Fire Investigation Unit and Fire Inspector/Fire Marshal. He brings a wealth of experience and on-the-job training and is unique in that he has spent his entire firefighting career with the Lombard Fire Department.
Torrence received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Benedictine University. He has extensive professional training from the Illinois State Fire Marshal including officer training, fire prevention, fire investigation, hazardous materials and incident command. He is also a member of the DuPage Fire Chief's Association.
“It's hard to leave,” Torrence said. “I care about everybody here and it has truly been my extended family for the past three decades,” he added.
“Mike's dedication and service for more than 33 years and his leadership in our Fire Department has enhanced the excellent service we provide to our residents,” said William Mueller, Lombard Village President. “Eileen and I congratulate Mike on his retirement and wish him and his family well in their new endeavor.”
