3rd guilty plea in White Sox kickback scheme
CHICAGO — A third former employee of the Chicago White Sox has pleaded guilty in a scheme to collect kickbacks from players the team had signed.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Jorge Oquendo Rivera pleaded guilty in federal court to mail fraud. The scout admitted to taking kickbacks from 17 players over three years.
Rivera admitted to sending $20,000 to $25,000 of one player's signing bonus to the team's former senior director of player personnel, David Wilder. Wilder was fired in 2008.
Wilder and another scout, Victor Mateo, have already pleaded guilty.
Rivera will be sentenced March 7.
