Maine West students stock pantry in ‘Cans Across Des Plaines’

In what has become an annual tradition, Maine West High School students and staff marked the upcoming holiday season by conducting “Cans Across Des Plaines” on Nov. 10. They formed a human chain to pass thousands of food items from the high school to the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines, four blocks away.

About 800 students and faculty members started their delivery queue just north of the school and the line stretched all the way north to Algonquin Road, to the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines.

Maine West students and staff prepared for the event by conducting a weeklong food drive, with competition among the classes to see which could bring in the most donations. Organizers hope the pre-Thanksgiving timing will boost food stocks as food pantries continue to see a strong need for assistance.
