Where have you gone, Teddy Roosevelt?

Scanning three toy catalogs, I could not find a single teddy bear. That’s sad, because right now our country could use a reminder of the ideals of Teddy Roosevelt.

Long before the Fair Deal and the New Deal, TR spoke out for the Square Deal, fair to business-owners and workers alike. He knew the difference between honest capitalists and the “malefactors of great wealth,” the robber barons who were — and are — not capitalists but neo-feudalists.

Can you imagine what he would say to those who bought up sub-sub-prime mortgages, stuck those mortgages together in bundles, sliced up the bundles, and then, knowing they were junk, sold the slices as AAA investments to pension funds and other trusting investors?

Tea Parties? No.

What our country needs is a teddy bear picnic. Time to ban the robber barons and bring back the Square Deal.
